MTCC begins shore protection in Thilafushi for waste management project

Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) has begun shore protection in Thilafushi, following the conclusion of reclaiming land for the waste management project.

As part of the waste management project, 15 hectares of land has been reclaimed from the lagoon of Thilafushi. The project was initiated to facilitate waste management in Greater Male' Region.

In addition to Greater Male' Region, waste from islands and resorts in Vaavu Atoll, Alifu Alifu Atoll and Alifu Dhaalu Atoll will also be managed in Thilafushi. Upon completion, waste from 23 islands will be managed in Thilafushi.

An improved waste collection, transfer, and disposal system, including trucks, transfer stations, waste vessels with rehabilitated harbour and heavy equipment for dumpsite management will be established in Thilafushi as part of the project.

Thilafushi waste management project is funded by USD 33 million from Asian Development Bank (ADB) and USD 40 million co-financing from the Japan Fund for Poverty Reduction (JFPR) and the government of Maldives.
