EU says it was reassured by the commitments made for an orderly transfer of power

The European Union delegation, which visited Maldives from October 5-8, has stated it was reassured by the commitments made by all interlocutors for an orderly transfer of power. The delegation was led by Tung-Lai Margue, who was accompanied by the EEAS Head of Division for South Asia Caroline Vinot.

In a statement released upon conclusion of the visit, the European Union delegation conveyed its readiness to strengthen bilateral relations, including providing assistance in areas such as reform of the judiciary, strengthening respect for human rights, rule of law, anti-corruption strategies, and climate change.

The delegation urged all parties to act responsibly and look towards the full restoration of democratic institutions in the future. The visit reflects the continued interest of the European Union in supporting the democratic aspirations of the Maldivian people and welcomed the peaceful conduct on polling day.

The officials called on the President-Elect Ibrahim Mohamed Solih as well as the outgoing Minister of Foreign Affairs Dr. Mohamed Asim, the Elections Commission, and the Director-General of Transition. The officials also held meetings with political party representatives and leaders, civil society organisations and members of the diplomatic community.
