Asia should mitigate disaster-effects via technology: Defence Minister

Minister of Defence Adam Shareef Umar has called to make Asia a region that utilises the latest technology in disaster impact mitigation.

Addressing high-level conference co-organised by the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) and the government of Thailand, Minister Adam Shareef stressed the importance of technology in recognising the threats natural disasters could pose to environmentally vulnerable small island nations such as Maldives.

Calling on participants to identify changes in climate and make Asia a region that would mitigate effects of climate change through technology, the minister stressed on the need for countries and regional bodies to formulate a road map to implement these strategies. The minister expressed hope the conference would decide a course of action in the event of a natural disaster.

At the conference, the defence minister also highlighted the experiences of Maldives in heading towards reaching the goals set in the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
