President-Elect requests to temporarily halt social housing project

President-Elect of Maldives Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has requested the outgoing government to halt the social housing project amidst corruption allegations in the ongoing efforts.

In a statement, the Office of the President-Elect raised concerns regarding the ongoing efforts of the current administration to provide housing for citizens. The statement said the corruption allegations against the government regarding the ongoing efforts are of concern.

The statement further noted the notice published to issue land plots does not specify the transparent structure of selecting tenants and the duration provided to submit the applications is not enough. For the aforementioned reasons, the Office of the President-Elect has urged to refrain from introducing any projects during the transition period.

The statement also highlighted Ibrahim Mohamed Solih is also aware of the need of affordable housing in Maldives and will address the issue when he assumes office.
