NDMC celebrates International Disaster Reduction Day

National Disaster Management Centre (NDMC) has celebrated International Disaster Reduction Day by holding a festival at Hulhumale' Central Pak. Vilunveri Fest 2018 portrayed how to act in case of a disaster or an incident.

Speaking to PSM News, Director General of NDMC Sofeenaz Hassan noted it is important to raise awareness among the public when several natural disasters are caused due to weather changes. Sofeenaz stated the best practices were portrayed to the public by field experts to minimise disaster risk.

The theme for this year's International Disaster Reduction Day is ''The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and Disaster Risk Reduction: Meeting Target C of the Sendai Framework.'' The festival was attended by NDMC, Maldivian Red Crescent, Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF), United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) and United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).

UNICEF Representative to Maldives Mohamed El Munir A. Safieldin said important measures are being taken to reduce the risk on children from disasters.
