High Court nullifies jail sentence on Maumoon

The High Court of Maldives has nullified the jail sentence issued by Criminal Court of Maldives on former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom.

After his arrest during the State of Emergency declared in Maldives in February this year, the former president was charged with obstruction of justice on his refusal to hand over his mobile phone to Maldives Police Service. The Criminal Court sentenced Maumoon to serve a jail sentence of one year and seven months after it found him guilty of the charges.

With the annulment of the verdict by High Court, Maumoon is free of all charges.
