Supreme Court verdict shows rumours spread against the electoral body were baseless

Elections Commission of Maldives has stated the verdict by the Supreme Court of Maldives has revealed the rumours spread against the electoral body regarding the presidential election are baseless.

Following the declaration by Supreme Court there are no grounds to nullify the Presidential Election 2018, President of Elections Commission Ahmed Shareef described the decision as a relief for the members of the electoral body. Ahmed Shareef noted the Elections Commission, on several occasions, had expressed the electoral process was conducted according to the laws and regulations. He further maintained the election held on September 23 was by far the most credible polls held in Maldives.

Following the Supreme Court verdict, leaders and members of the opposition coalition expressed their views. In this regard, in a tweet, former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom stated the landmark ruling by Supreme Court has endorsed and validated the position of President-Elect and Vice President-Elect. Moreover, in another tweet, Leader of Jumhooree Party Qasim Ibrahim stated the Supreme Court has shown that justice can still be achieved in Maldives.

Meanwhile, Deputy Leader of ruling Progressive party of Maldives (PPM) Abdul Raheem Abdulla expressed however the political situation changes in the country; he will remain with President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom.

On the motion submitted on behalf of President Yameen to nullify the presidential election, the Supreme Court declared there are no grounds to nullify the Presidential Election 2018 due to lack of evidence by the prosecution to prove the claims.
