Elections Commission cancels letter sent to remove Fazad from Parliament

Elections Commission of Maldives has overturned the letter sent out to remove Ali Fazad from Parliament of Maldives.

Speaking to PSM News, member of Elections Commission Ahmed Akram said a letter has been submitted to Elections Commission by Fazad, stating the decision to remove him from Progressive Party of Maldives was made without completing the relevant procedure. After assessing the request, Elections Commission has now decided to nullify the previous decision to remove him from the parliament, adding the electoral body is going to review the case again, according to Akram.

Ali Fazad was removed from PPM, days after he stopped attending political activities. However, Fazad participated in campaign activities of President-Elect Ibrahim Mohamed Solih which triggered PPM to remove Fazad from the party.

A parliamentarian would lose his seat if the member violates the party charter, after investigating the case by the party, according to the Anti-Defection Act of Maldives.
