Parliament Speaker faces third attempt to unseat him, no confidence motion scheduled for Nov. 8

51 parliamentarians have signed and submitted a no-confidence motion against Parliament Speaker Abdulla Maseeh Mohamed. This is the third time a no-confidence motion has been filed against the Speaker of Parliament.

Speaking to the press after submitting the motion, parliamentarian Abdulla Riyaz noted it was due to the negligence of Speaker Maseeh the parliament is not functioning to its full potential, as the reason behind the decision of the opposition coalition to file the motion.

Twice, opposition parliamentarians have filed no-confidence motions against the Parliament Speaker, but have failed to remove Maseeh from the post. However, Riyaz expressed confidence that this time around, the motion would pass.

Among the 51 parliamentarians that signed the no-confidence motion, 38 members are representing the opposition coalition and the rest consist of parliamentarians representing the ruling Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM), Maldives Development Alliance (MDA) and independents.

Furthermore, the Parliament Secretariat has now scheduled the no confidence motion for November 8, in accordance with the Constitution of Maldives and parliamentary regulations.
