The Prosecutor General's Office has appealed to the Supreme Court of Maldives to review the 13-year jail sentence passed on former President Mohamed Nasheed, after being convicted of terrorism.
A statement issued by the Prosecutor General's Office said the appeal was made following numerous requests to review various aspects of the sentence and as the office saw it was a case that involves public interest. The decision coincides with former President Nasheed's announcement that he would be returning to Maldives on November 1.
Nasheed was convicted of terrorism, for the arrest of the former Chief Judge of the Criminal Court Abdulla Mohamed. The 13-year jail sentence passed on the former president was appealed at the High Court by the state, which the High Court upheld.
The appeal by Prosecutor General's Office comes in the wake of a motion submitted by the opposition coalition to parliament, calling on the office to call for the nullification of the 13-year jail sentence passed on the former president. The motion claims the sentence was passed in violation of the constitution and laws, in addition to international declarations that Maldives has signed.
