The surgery in Addu was performed on a 60 years old woman by Head of Orthopaedic Department at Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH) Dr. Ali Muznee and his team.
Speaking to the press at Hithadhoo Regional Hospital Dr. Muznee said performing knee replacement surgeries in Addu will minimise the cost and ease the process for patients. Dr. Muznee expressed hope the surgery will be performed in other atolls in the future. In this regard, Dr. Muznee added a knee surgery is scheduled to be performed in Thinadhoo in Gaafu Dhaalu Atoll.
The first ever knee replacement surgery was performed at IGMH, 13 years ago, by a team of foreign doctors. However, the surgery is now conducted by local doctors.
