Elections commission condemns threats to its members and officials

Elections Commission of Maldives has condemned the threats to its members and officials who were actively engaged in the presidential election held on September 23.

A statement issued by elections commission noted the threats have increased during the recent days. Calls are being made to the officials who were active in the presidential election and are being forcefully taken to places and questioned depicting as the commission, according to the Elections Commission. The statement assured if any problems or issues need to be clarified; only a registered number of the commission will make calls or send written documents seeking answers.

The electoral body has asked to refrain from such cowardly acts, requesting to ensure the rights bestowed on the members and officials of the commission by Article 24 of the Constitution of Maldives.

Even though the commission has alleged threats to its members and officials, no cases were submitted to any authority for investigation.
