Former President Maumoon Abdul Gayyoom has expressed confidence the incoming government of President-Elect Ibrahim Mohamed Solih will take responsible measures to ensure the peace and sovereignty of the country.
In a statement issued commemorating the Victory Day, former President Maumoon Abdul Gayyoom assured to fully cooperate in the efforts of the incoming government in ensuring peace, sovereignty and security in Maldives, further expressing confidence in the choices of President-Elect Ibrahim Mohamed Solih. Noting the main reason why peace was restored in the country on November 3, 1988, Maumoon highlighted it was courage, will and sacrifice of those who were martyred and of the military forces as well as the whole community.
Former President Maumoon, who was the president in 1988, thanked the efforts of the citizens and the government, urging all Maldivians to live in accordance with the Islamic principles and to put forth nationality above all.
Moreover, in a tweet posted, Maumoon recalled with much gratitude the prompt assistance provided by the Indian government and armed forces 30 years ago in defeating the foreign militants and protecting the independence.
Each year, on November 3, Maldives marks Victory Day to celebrate the defeat of an attempted coup in 1988.
