"Island Electricity Data Book 2018" launched

Ministry of Environment and Energy has launched Island Electricity Data Book 2018. The data book was launched by Minister of Environment and Energy Thoriq Ibrahim. The ceremony held to launch the book was attended by senior officials from relevant government organisations.

First initiated in 2013, a compilation of information in the energy sector of the Maldives was published under the title Maldives Energy Outlook for Inhabited islands 2013. The Island Electricity Data Book 2018 is the fourth in the series and contains electricity data of all the inhabited islands and some tourist resorts of the Maldives. In addition to island electricity data for each inhabited island of the Maldives, the book also shows the growth of renewable energy in the Maldives.

Addressing the ceremony held to launch the data book, Environment Minister Thoriq Ibrahim highlighted the achievements of the energy sector within the past five years. 561,435 metric tonne of fuel was imported, out of which 14,483 metric tonne was cooking gas, 447,555 metric ton was diesel, 57,730 metric tonne was petrol and 41,666 metric tonne was aviation gas, according to the statistics in the data book.

The inhabited islands of the Maldives have a total installed capacity of 240 megawatt of diesel generators to cater for the electricity demand. During the past year, the total power generation from renewable energy in Maldives has been increased to 11 megawatt.
