Police restart investigations on murders of Afrasheem, Yameen and disappearance of Rilwan

Maldives Police Service has restarted the investigation on the murder of former Parliamentarian Dr. Afrasheem Ali, the murder of prominent blogger Yameen Rasheed and the disappearance of journalist Ahmed Rilwan.

In a tweet, the police service revealed it has begun efforts to see if there is more they can do regarding the cases. The police made the statement in the wake of the incoming government pledging to fully investigate the cases and bring a closure to the families.

Dr. Afrasheem was found brutally murdered in the stairwell of his house on night of the September 30 in 2013. Although charges were raised against two individuals, with one convicted, the real masterminds behind the murder were not found. The police previously revealed the murder was planned and financed politically.

Meanwhile, two individuals were arrested and charged for the disappearance of journalist Ahmed Rilwan. However, they were not convicted due to lack of evidence.

A total of seven individuals have been charged for the murder of prominent blogger Yameen Rasheed, with their cases ongoing in courts of law.
