Parliament of Maldives has passed a motion to dismiss Ibrahim Riza from representing the parliament at the Judicial Service Commission (JSC).
The motion to dismiss Parliamentarian Ibrahim Riza was submitted by Parliamentarian Mohamed Nazim on October 31. The motion was passed with 42 votes in favour and 24 voted against with 1 abstention.
Riza was accused of violating procedure and justice in investigating and issuing penalties when complaints are filed against judges, in addition to making use of the opportunities available to him as a member of the ruling party and JSC to represent state companies in courts of law for high fees.
Addressing the parliament during the debate, in his defence, Riza said the dismissal motion was filed in interests of a personal agenda and denied the authenticity of the accusations against him. Riza expressed he has previously never been accused of misconduct or questioned regarding any possible wrongful conduct during his years at the JSC.
Riza has been the parliament representative at the JSC since July, 2014.
