Transition Committee has cited the lack of professional staff for the delay in carrying out the responsibilities mandated.
Addressing a press conference held by the Transition Committee after reviewing work carried out by Ministry of Housing and Infrastructure and the Ministry of Environment and Energy, member of the committee Mohamed Aslam said housing ministry is overburdened as it now handles the mandates of institutes such as Maldives Road Development Corporation (MRDC) and local councils.
The excessive amount of work, in turn, results in difficulties to provide optimum services to the public, stated Aslam. He said while the Infrastructure department at the ministry requires 95 staff to handle approximately 80 projects, the department is being run with a mere 26 permanent staff and 10 contract staff.
With regard to the environment ministry, Mohamed Aslam noted numerous projects have been completed in work related to waste management and the generation of solar power, in addition to the provision of water and sewerage facilities. However, he added maintenance work has posed challenges to the ministry.
