USD 33 million allocated for environment protection in State Budget 2019

The incoming government has allocated USD 33 million for environment protection.

The amount allocated for environment protection is 7.7% of the Public Sector Investment Programme (PSIP) budget, according to the state budget. Environment protection projects include beach protection and water drainage. The largest amount from the figure allocated for environment protection was set aside for waste management. In this regard, USD 15 million was allotted for 21 waste management projects.

The waste management projects to be conducted include constructing a dumpster in Baarah in Haa Alifu Atoll, developing a waste management centre in Dhin'bidhoo in Laamu Atoll and upgrading the waste management centre in Villingili in Gaafu Alifu Atoll.

Meanwhile, the second most amount in the state budget is allocated for renewable energy which is 2.8% of the PSIP budget. It includes pre-pairing outer island for sustainable energy development project (POISED) conducted with Asian Development Bank (ADB) aid and accelerating sustainable private investment in renewable energy (ASPIRE) project funded by World Bank.
