The Government of Maldives has decided to re-join The Commonwealth. The decision was made at the first cabinet meeting of the new administration.
During the discussion held regarding re-joining The Commonwealth, the ministers highlighted the opportunities the organisation offers to Maldives, especially for the youth of the country. In this regard, the ministers noted the scholarship opportunities and international sports opportunities for athletes.
Moreover, cabinet ministers expressed importance of being a member country of The Commonwealth to recognise Maldives in all sectors in the globalised world. In this regard, the ministers spoke on the role of The Commonwealth in voicing out human rights and freedom of expression.
Furthermore, the minister noted the cooperation of The Commonwealth towards achieving Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and environment protection, if the Maldives become a member of The Commonwealth.
Following the discussions, by the powers bestowed upon in Article 115 of the Constitution, President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih decided to re-join The Commonwealth and to submit the motion for a parliamentary approval. All legal procedures have commenced to join The Commonwealth, according to President's Office.
Maldives became a member of The Commonwealth on July 9, 1982 and exited the 53-member organisation on October 13, 2013.
