High Court of Maldives has upheld the jail sentence on former Managing Director of Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC) Abdulla Ziyath.
Criminal Court of Maldives sentenced Abdulla Ziyath to 8 years in prison after finding him guilty of embezzlement. He was charged for embezzling USD 5 million that was paid to the state as acquisition cost for Maabinhura in Lhaviyani Atoll, leased to be developed as a tourist resort.
In the appeal hearing, High Court stated Ziyath being the managing director conducted illegal use of state funds and it is clear embezzlement of state assets and funds have taken place without reasonable doubt.
