Minister of Foreign Affairs Abdulla Shahid has revealed efforts are underway to figure ways to pay-off the debt owed by Maldives to other foreign countries and parties, expressing concern over the high amount of debt.
Speaking at the first press conference since taking over the ministerial responsibilities, Foreign Minister Shahid said discussions are underway with foreign governments to review the debt and a pay-off plan. Noting as part of the efforts, several overseas trips are planned, Minister Shahid said a Maldivian delegation will embark on official visit to India next week.
In this regard, the foreign minister noted the delegation will be led by Minister of Finance Ahmed Ameer, Minister of Economic Development Fayyaz Ismail and himself. During the trip, meetings will be held with Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi, Ministry of External Affairs Sushma Swaraj and other high level dignitaries to update on the situation of Maldives and to discuss ways to further enhance relations. He also noted similar trips are planned to China, Saudi Arabia and UAE.
Moreover, highlighting the past government took loans on commercial rates, Minister Shahid said it negatively impacts the economy of the country. Furthermore, the minister went on to note during the past five years, Maldives was left out in the international arena with no respect and trust. However, he assured the foreign policy will be reshaped during the current presidential term.
