Maldives will not scrap FTA with China

Minister of Foreign Affairs Abdulla Shahid has assured the Government of Maldives has no plans to abolish the Free Trade Agreement with China.

Answering a question posed by PSM News at a news briefing, the foreign minister refuted rumours circulated by several media outlets saying Maldives will abolish the Free Trade Agreement with China. However, the minister added relevant authorities are reviewing and assessing the agreement which was signed off hastily. Noting the agreement consists of over 1,000 pages and the parliament committee took about 15 minutes to review the agreement, Shahid revealed the agreement is being studied again.

The Free Trade Agreement with China was established last year.
