Supreme Court nullifies jail sentence on Home Minister

Supreme Court of Maldives has nullified the 12-year jail sentence on Minister of Home Affairs Imran Abdullah.

High Court upheld the Criminal Court verdict of the 12-year sentence on Imran Abdullah after finding him guilty of inciting violence during a speech delivered in the 2015 May Day rally. Initially, Supreme Court rejected the case. However, when Imran filed an appeal, the Supreme Court accepted the case and began to review the jail sentence passed on him. Supreme Court also issued an order in October, to defer the implementation of the jail sentence on Imran, until the bench reviews the appeal filed by the Prosecutor General.

The appointment of Imran Abdullah as the home minister was in question as he had a deferred jail sentence.
