Following a High Court order, Elections Commission of Maldives has accepted the decision made at the Extraordinary Congress to appoint former President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom as the leader of Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM).
In a letter sent to Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom, President of Elections Commission Ahmed Shareef revealed the High Court has nullified the decision of the electoral body to reject the decisions made by PPM during its Extraordinary Congress held right after the presidential election. In the letter, Ahmed Shareef noted, following the court order, the Elections Commission has decided to accept all decisions made during the congress held on September 28, revealing the changes brought to the party charter and party posts have now been registered.
However, Ahmed Shareef had mentioned in the letter the decision of High Court will be appealed at Supreme Court.
High Court ruled the refusal by Elections Commission to accept the decisions made during the Extraordinary National Congress was in violation of the laws and regulations. During the court proceedings, Election Commission maintained it refused to accept the decisions made in the Congress as it was held in defiance of set procedures.
However, PPM said it appealed the case to facilitate the resumption of party activities which have been halted with the rejection of the party decisions made at the congress. The party also added the Congress was held with observers from the commission in attendance and the decisions made were communicated within the set timeframe.
During the Congress, former President Yameen was elected as the party leader along with four deputy leaders.
