Maumoon Reform Movement (MRM) has refuted rumours that former president Maumoon Abdul Gayoom accepted a donation of over USD 1.87 million from Abdulla Jabir, a prominent businessman and the Special Envoy of President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih. Jabir offered the donation during the run-up to the presidential election held on September 23, according to the rumours and critics.
Declining the rumours, in a statement, MRM assured the public the former president was not offered any donations for a political favour or as funds for campaign activities.
In a tweet, Jabir stated his wife and former Attorney General Dhiyana Saeed will contest in the upcoming parliamentary elections, adding Maumoon should not act as an obstruction in her ambitions.
