Parliament to investigate forceful removal and assault on parliamentarians by security forces

Parliament of Maldives has decided to summon senior personal from the military and police forces to the committee on privileges and conduct to investigate the forceful removal and physical assault on parliamentarians by security forces and the siege of the parliament on July 24, 2017.

The submission to parliament was made by Parliamentarian Imthiyaz Fahumee. The parliament decided to summon former Minister of Home Affairs Azleen Ahmed, former Minister of Defence and National Security Adam Shareef Umar, former Parliament Speaker Abdulla Maseeh and Chief of Defence Force Major General Ahmed Shiyam, in addition to former Parliament Secretariat Ahmed Mohamed. The decision to summon senior personal was passed unanimously with the vote of all members of the committee on privileges and conduct.

The security forces forcefully removed several parliamentarians during a sitting scheduled to hold the vote for the no-confidence motion against the then Parliament Speaker Abdulla Maseeh. With the removal of the opposition parliamentarians the sitting was cancelled on that day. Imthiyaz submitted a detailed report on the physical assaults on parliamentarians and the use of pepper spray against the lawmakers.

Moreover, describing the act as a constitutional breach, Imthiyaz Fahumee stated the security forces did not respect the rights of the parliamentarians and had violated the constitution.
