President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has sent a message of condolence US President Donald Trump, following the death of former US President George Herbert Walker Bush. In the message, President Solih said it was with great sadness that he learnt of the death of President George Herbert Walker Bush.
On behalf of the government and people of the Maldives, the president offered sympathies and condolences to the Bush family, government and people of the US. Furthermore, he said President Bush was an exemplary statesman whose long years of public service from naval aviator to congressman to Ambassador to the United Nations and subsequently Vice President and President of the US displayed an exceptional character marked by courage, perseverance and an overwhelming sense of duty.
On conclusion, he said President Bush also holds a special place in the hearts of Maldivians, when he, along with former President Bill Clinton, visited tsunami-affected communities in the Maldives in 2005 following the devastation caused by the Asian Tsunami of 2004. He noted President Bush's interventions were instrumental in securing US assistance for post-Tsunami reconstruction in the Maldives.
