Supreme Court of Maldives has ruled former head of the intelligence department at Maldives Police Service was dismissed illegally. In its ruling, the Supreme Court said Mohamed Hameed was dismissed against the rules and regulations and he should be reinstated.
Mohamed Hameed was dismissed from the police service in August 2012 on allegations he leaked intelligence information. He was also arrested for investigation.
The Civil Court had also ruled Hameed was dismissed illegally and had ordered his reinstatement. However, the High Court had annulled the decision.
The Supreme Court ordered Hameed to be reinstated in the wake of rumours that he would be appointed as the Commissioner of Police. However, he should first be promoted to an Assistant Commissioner of Police or a Deputy Commissioner of Police as only senior officers of the force can be appointed as the commissioner.
