President assures to cooperate in enhancing SAARC

President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has sent a letter to Secretary General of South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) Amjad Hussain B. Sial on the occasion of its Charter Day.

In the message, President Solih said it gives him great pleasure to extend warm greetings from the Government and the people of Maldives to the Secretary General of SAARC, staff at the SAARC Secretariat and people of all SAARC member states on the occasion of 34th Anniversary of the founding of SAARC.

The president noted since its founding in 1985, SAARC has played a key role in promoting cooperation and collaboration among member states in a wide variety of areas encompassing economic, social, cultural and technical fields.

The president said the organisation has proven to be an important vehicle that has helped foster greater understanding and friendship amongst the peoples of the South Asia region. He noted South Asia is enriched by cultural diversity whilst united in its hopes for a peaceful and prosperous region.

Furthermore, President Solih said Maldives remain determined to work together with SAARC in realising the noble aspirations the founders of SAARC envisioned for the peoples of South Asia in overcoming the many and varied challenges facing the people.

On this special occasion, the president wished to assure the full commitment of the Government of Maldives to play its part in strengthening regional cooperation towards improved economic status and a peaceful region. The president said it is his sincere hope that differences are put aside and work together as an organisation to be able to meaningfully contribute towards improving the welfare and quality of life of the people.

On conclusion, he wished SAARC and the region a peaceful and prosperous future.
