Minister of Fisheries, Marine Resources and Agriculture Zaha Waheed has announced plans to introduce a special loan scheme for fishermen.
Speaking on a programme aired on Dhivehiraajjeyge Adu, Fisheries Minister Zaha Waheed highlighted ice generating mechanisms are not established in most fishing vessels. In this regard, the minister expressed efforts are underway to establish such mechanisms in fishing vessels, adding a special loan scheme to ease the process. She said the loans will be issued within the next 60 days.
The minister also noted even though there are ice producing plants established in various areas of the country, fishermen face difficulties due to the lack of proper functioning of the facilities.
While the government has commenced efforts to issue loans to fishermen, it is an electoral pledge of President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih.
