Parliament abolishes duty from products and equipment imported for agriculture

Parliament has abolished import duty from various products and equipment brought to the Maldives for agricultural purposes. The bill was passed with 53 votes in favour.

The bill to amend the Export Import Act of the Maldives was submitted to the Parliament by Ibrahim Shareef. In the bill, the parliamentarian proposed to stop taking import duty from the items specified by the relevant authorities.

The aim of the amendment is to facilitate the introduction and expansion of fisheries across the country. The change is expected to bring a substantial boost to the country's economy.

Exempting import duty from products imported for agricultural use is one of presidential pledges of President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih.
