Dr. Jameel to contest in parliamentary elections

Former Vice President Dr. Mohamed Jameel Ahmed has announced his candidature for Villimale' constituency in the upcoming parliamentary elections. Dr. Mohamed Jameel. the first Vice President in the administration of former President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom, currently acts as the special advisor to the leader of Jumhooree Party.

Explaining why he chose to compete in the parliamentary elections, Dr. Jameel said he made the decision to support the efforts of President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih to achieve the goals and pledges of the administration. Noting Villimale' needs to be developed to the same standards as the other zones in the capital, Male' City, Dr. Jameel assured to represent the constituency to the best of his abilities to ensure the development needed for the island. In this regard, he expressed hope to link Villimale', Male' and Thifalushi via a bridge, and improving the ferry services between Villimale' and Male' City.

Dr. Jameel, who holds a doctorate of philosophy in law, served as Minister of Justice and the Chief Judge of Criminal Court in the administration of former President Maumoon Abdul Gayyoom. He further filled cabinet positions in the administrations of former President Mohamed Nasheed and former President Dr. Mohamed Waheed Hassan Manik. Jameel also worked actively in the Maldives United Opposition, a multi-party political movement formed against former President Yameen.

The Elections Commission of Maldives has announced parliamentary elections will be held on April 6.
