MRM begins interviewing candidates for parliamentary elections

Maumoon Reform Movement (MRM) has begun efforts to select candidates to compete in the parliamentary elections. In this regard, the movement led by former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom has begun interviewing prospective candidates competing in the elections.

MRM said although an interviewing process has begun, the constituencies the candidates will compete for have not been decided. Further, MRM said it supports the efforts to compete in the elections as a coalition. MRM is among the four parties of the government coalition.

Although, MRM has begun efforts to select candidates to compete in the elections, the Elections Commission has revealed MRM is not a registered movement and would not be able to campaign or compete under the name. The electoral body has also said MRM would not be represented in any talks with the political parties and it would not be given the provisions provided to other political parties.

Other government coalition partners, Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) and Jumhooree Party (JP), has also opened opportunity for interested candidates to submit documents to contest in the elections.

The parliamentary elections is scheduled to be held on April 6.
