MTD appoints Adeeb as party president

Maldives Third-Way Democrats (MTD) has appointed former Vice President Ahmed Adeeb as the interim president of MTD.

MTD made the decision to appoint Ahmed Adeeb as the interim president unanimously with the vote of 8 members present at the second meeting of the interim council. MTD also appointed founder of the party Ismail Asif as the senior vice president and parliamentarian Yameen Rasheed as the vice president.

Spokesperson and the member of Elections Commission Ahmed Akram said no details of Adeeb's appointment have been received by the electoral body. In this regard, Akram said the commission will not accept the decision of MTD to appoint Adeeb as the president of the party.

A convicted criminal serving a jail sentence cannot engage in any political activity, according to the political party act. However, a convicted criminal can become a member of a political party.

Adeeb is completing a 33-year jail sentence after the courts found him guilty of corruption and terrorism.
