Authoritative powers to disaster management body to ease efforts

Project Director at National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) Hisaan Hassan says granting authoritative powers to the disaster management body will ease the efforts to conduct disaster management activities.

President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih established the National Disaster Management Authority, as required by the Disaster Management Act. The establishment of the institution replaces the National Disaster Management Centre (NDMC).

Following the changes, Project Director Hisaan Hassan said the decision of president proves the importance attached in disaster management efforts and to minimise the risk of disasters. Speaking in this regard, Hisaan noted the disaster management activities will be further enhanced under the authoritative body.

NDMA was established in an effort to minimise the impact of disasters, by establishing a proper mechanism to organise and coordinate disaster management activities at national, atoll, and island levels that are conducted by state institutions, non-governmental organisations and the private sector.
