Yameen was summoned for providing false information: Police

Maldives Police Service has revealed former President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom was summoned over allegations of providing false information.

The police service expressed the institution has launched an investigation into the embezzlement of funds from Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC), which collected payments by leasing islands and lagoons former President Yameen was in office.

A large amount received by the MMPRC was deposited to Yameen's account opened at the Maldives Islamic Bank (MIB) and the police are looking into allegations Yameen had attempted to cover up his involvement in the scandal by providing false information to investigative authorities, according to the police.

Moreover, the police noted Yameen formally conceded his signature and fingerprint when he was provided with details of the allegations and the possible criminal charges.

The former president dismissed the allegations raised against him and notes there is no weight in the ongoing police investigations.
