Ministry of Environment has revealed 8 pledges have been achieved as part of the first 100-day pledge policy of President Ibrahim Solih. The President's Office has assigned 11 pledges to be fulfilled by the ministry within the first 100-days of the administration.
Revealing information to media, environment ministry said it has now achieved 8 pledges within the first 30 working days, with efforts exerted to achieve the remaining 3 pledges. In this regard, the ministry revealed an environment awareness programme has commenced for members elected to fill high level positions which has been so far conducted for 80 councillors, in addition to ministers and members of Civil Service Commission.
Protecting at least one island, one reef, and one wetland from each atoll is part of the first 100-day goals of the administration. As part of the pledge, the administration has declared the wetlands and mangroves of Baarah in Haa Alif Atoll, Keylakunu in Haa Dhaalu Atoll, along with its reef and lagoon area, the wetlands and mangroves of Neykurendhoo in Haa Dhaalu Atoll as conservation areas. Moreover, the president inaugurated the nationwide tree planting programme and the nationwide cleaning campaign.
In efforts to empower the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the administration has granted more powers to the authority. In addition, environment ministry introduced a web portal to publicise environment related surveys.
It is also a pledge of the administration to participate in COP24 and voice out concerns on climate change. In this regard, former president Mohamed Nasheed and Minister of Environment Dr. Hussain Rasheed Hassan attended COP24 and voiced concerns on the effects of climate change to small island nations such as Maldives.
