Number of cases reported to police decreased last year

Maldives Police Service has revealed the number of cases reported to the institution decreased last year. However, the police noted an increase in the number of drug cases reported last year.

Speaking to media regarding the cases reported in 2017 and 2018, Chief Inspector of Police and Spokesperson of Police Izmiya Zahir revealed the number of cases reported in the past year decreased due to the efforts exerted by the police to minimise crimes or because of lack of public trust to the institution. She said 14,811 cases were reported in 2018 which is a decrease of 3% compared to 2017, according to statistics. In 2017, 15,535 cases were reported to the institution.

The most number of cases were reported regarding theft which is 3,270. The second most number of cases were related to drugs which is 2,230 cases. 2,007 cases were reported as traffic accidents, which is the third most number of cases reported to the police.

Meanwhile, all types of cases except drug related cases decreased 2018, including cases of violence, theft, mugging and traffic accidents. Moreover, the number of cases forwarded to the Prosecutor General's Office decreased by 20% in 2018, compared to 2017.

The police also revealed several efforts are exerted to minimise the crime rate in Maldives.
