Islam will not be demeaned to protect national heritage: State Minister Thoriq

Ministry of Arts, Culture and Heritage has assured Islam will not be demeaned in efforts to protect the national heritage of the country.

Speaking on a programme aired on PSM News regarding the clash over where the Kalhuvakaru Mosque should be relocated, Minister of State for Arts, Culture and Heritage Mohamed Thoriq said the decision to relocate the mosque to Sultan Park was made following extensive discussions with the general public, cabinet ministers and scholars.

The state minister stated the decision was made to relocate the mosque to the grounds where the head office of Dhiraagu once stood. Moreover, Thoriq said talking with some scholars revealed the importance of placing a structure showing the Islamic heritage in the area.

Condemning the removal of Kalhuvakaru Mosque without proper care by the previous administration, he said several individuals have expressed interest to assist in the relocation efforts of the mosque.

The historic mosque previously stood in the premises of the Sultan Park. However, the previous administration dismantled the mosque and built a winter theme park on the spot.
