Public calls to reduce taxi fares

The public has called to reduce taxi fares in the Greater Male' Region. The forum held by Ministry of Transport and Civil Aviation was attended by taxi drivers and members of the general public. The forum was organised to provide a platform for drivers and the public to discuss on the issues and to finalise a feasible taxi fare.

Addressing the forum, Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation Aishath Nahula said the forum was held to get ideas from the public before making a decision on an issue which is of grave importance. Some attendees of the forum highlighted USD 1.62 for a taxi ride in Male' City is considered high, adding the fare to travel to Hulhule and Hulhumale' is significantly higher.

Meanwhile, some attendees noted how fares are calculated in some neighbouring countries, highlighting the importance of installing meters in taxis to avoid increase in fares.

While the public raised concerns over increased taxi fares, the taxi drivers said USD 6.47 to Hulhule' and Hulhumale' should not be considered high and a lower fare would not be financially feasible. The taxi drivers also noted the revenue generated is less compared to the expenses spent on maintaining the vehicles and the commissions for the taxi owners and the taxi centres.

The concerns were raised by public following the opening of Sina-Male Bridge and the adjoining highway and the ring road for traffic, connecting Male'-Hulhule'-Hulhumale', which resulted in uncontrolled taxi fares.
