Transport Ministry to introduce metre taxi

Ministry of Transport and Civil Aviation has decided to make it compulsory to install metres in taxis and wear helmets when travelling on the Sina-Male' Bridge.

Addressing a press conference, Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation Aishath Nahula revealed it has been decided to introduce metre taxi in Maldives. Highlighting the public support for the introduction of metre taxi in Maldives, Minister Nahula expressed hope the decision will control the increased taxi fares when travelling from Male' to Hulhule' and Hulhumale' on the Sina-Male' Bridge.

The public had raised concerns regarding the increased taxi fare within Male', Hulhule and Hulhumale'. However, taxi drivers defended the rates, while the transport ministry has exerted efforts to review the fares. The minister added the details about the metre taxis will be announced in the coming days, emphasising even if metre taxis are introduced, the fare for rides within Male' will be strictly fixed at USD 1.62.

Furthermore, speaking at the press conference, Minister Nahula stated it has been decided to make it compulsory to wear helmets while crossing the Sina-Male' Bridge to ensure safety and protection. In this regard, the minister said everyone travelling on the bridge should wear helmets from March 10 onwards.

Moreover, Minister Nahula expressed a regulation to travel on the bridge will be compiled and announced soon, adding traffic police or relevant authorities will monitor whether the regulations are followed. She noted it is an individual responsibility to take security precautions.

Meanwhile, Deputy Minister at Transport Ministry Mohamed Rafeeu added it would be compulsory to wear helmets on the ring road as well, adding if the regulations are not followed necessary legal action will be taken against the violators.
