The Presidential Commission on Corruption and Asset Recovery has begun investigating the corruption scandal of Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC).
The first case under investigation is the MMPRC corruption case, which is regarded as the biggest ever corruption scandal in Maldivian history. The commission has made an appeal for the general public to submit any information or document which may be of assistance to the investigation of the case.
Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) had revealed over USD 91.9 million had been embezzled through the state tourism promotion company. ACC stated even though the investigation found over USD 71.5 million was received from leased islands and lagoons, only USD 12.5 million were deposited to the bank account of MMPRC.
President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih established Presidential Commission on Corruption and State Asset Recovery is to recuperate the lost asset of the state from January 1, 2012 to November 17, 2018 and to ensure all responsible authorities carryout the legal duties in investigating the corruption and abuse of power within state institutions.
