Maumoon to intervene in court case regarding PPM leadership

Former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom has decided to intervene in the ongoing court case regarding the leadership of Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM).

In the case filed at the Civil Court, a request was made to hand over the leadership of the party to the lawfully elected President of PPM Maumoon Abdul Gayoom, citing the current leadership is invalid. Initially, the lawsuit was filed at Civil Court.

However, Supreme Court held a preliminary hearing after taking the case file to Supreme Court.

PSM News has learnt representatives of Maumoon are preparing to intervene to the ongoing case at the Supreme Court. During the preliminary hearing held on Monday, both sides exchanged relevant documents for trial, according to Department of Judicial Administration (DJA).

While Supreme Court has taken over the case regarding the dispute over the leadership of former ruling party, current President of PPM, former President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom and his allies have commenced efforts to form a new political party, People's National Congress (PNC).

Earlier, Civil Court had decided to hand over PPM to former President Yameen., following the expulsion of Maumoon and Parliamentarian Faris Maumoon from the party, in connection with differences that stemmed from efforts to take a no-confidence motion against Parliament Speaker Abdulla Maseeh Mohamed.
