Maldives Police Service has requested relevant authorities to negotiate with the family and gain permission to perform an autopsy of the woman who died while in police custody Monday night. The 23 year old died while being held at Dhoonidhoo Penitentiary.
In a statement, the police revealed the woman was being held as a suspect in connection with an ongoing case. On her death, the police has requested the National Integrity Commission (NIC) and the Human Rights Commission of Maldives (HRCM) to launch a probe, according to the statement.
The police revealed it has also requested authorities to negotiate with the family of the deceased, to obtain permission to perform an autopsy. From the moment the young woman was taken into custody until the moment of her death, all rights reserved were given to her, according to the police.
The police also said during her time at Dhoonidhoo Penitentiary she consulted the doctor twice and received treatment.
