Former President secures bid to compete for parliament seat

Former President Mohamed Nasheed secures bid to compete in the parliamentary elections.

The former president competed with Ashiyath Alaika Adnan in the primary elections of Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) to win the party ticket for Mid-Machangolhi constituency. Nasheed won the primary with 267 votes, while his opponent, Alaika, won 52 votes.

In 1999, Nasheed, who was then a famous reporter, won a parliament seat but was not able to complete his term as he was jailed for theft. It is also the first time in Maldives a former president is competing in an election, after filling the highest office in the country.
