Supreme Court concludes appeal hearings on EC vs PPM case

Supreme Court of Maldives has concluded appeal hearings on the case submitted by Elections Commission regarding the validity of the Extraordinary National Congress held by Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM).

Previously, the High Court ruled the refusal by Elections Commission to accept the decisions made during the Extraordinary National Congress, held immediately after the presidential election, was in violation of the laws and regulations. Following the High Court verdict, Elections Commission appealed the case at the Supreme Court. Concluding the appeal hearings, Supreme Court said if no other information needs to be detailed, the verdict would be announced in a future date.

Elections Commission refused to accept the decisions made in the congress as it was held in defiance of set procedures. Following the results of the presidential election, PPM held an Extraordinary National Congress and elected former President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom as the president of the party.

Since then, President Yameen formed another political party, People's National Congress (PNC), as the validity of the leadership of PPM was contested in courts of law.
