Opposition express interest to join JP in parliamentary elections

The opposition parties have expressed interest to join Jumhooree Party (JP) to avoid Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) from receiving the parliament coalition.

Opinions regarding the parliamentary elections are widely divided in the ruling government coalition with no common grounds achieved. President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has met all coalition leaders to come to an agreement regarding the allocation of the constituencies among the coalition parties. However, no decisions were made.

Leader of Jumhooree Party Qasim Ibrahim has expressed readiness to break away from the coalition with the main ruling party and to join with other political parties for the upcoming parliamentary elections.

Meanwhile, Majority leader of Parliament Ahmed Nihan Hussain Manik complimented Qasim and expressed interest to work together with Jumhooree Party. In addition, Parliamentarian Dr. Abdulla Khaleel who recently joined People’s National Congress (PNC) stated collective effort will be exerted to refrain from MDP attaining parliament majority.
