Administration will not entitle or accept any actions against Islam: President

President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has stated the administration will not entitle or accept any actions against Islam.

Speaking at a press conference, President Solih assured the administration will uphold Islamic principles and values, adding the administration will not allow extremism in the name of religion. The president highlighted recently debates on several religious topics in social media have caused chaos, assuring there are laws that can be implemented, warning if needed, the administration will not hesitate to take action to protect the religious beliefs.

Reiterating the importance of peace in the country for the development to take place, President Solih said no individual will be given the opportunity to disrupt the peace and sovereignty of the country. Further, he advised Maldivians to always put forth peace above everything else.

Recently, comments have been exchanged in social media using religious slogans and verses of Quran to justify actions. Meanwhile, Maldives Police Service has also assured to take action on any action that will demean the peace in the country.

On January 22, President Solih assembled a committee to find a solution to the uprising issue on religious criticism targeted to Islamic faith upon the advisement of the cabinet. The members of the committee include Vice President Faisal Naseem, Minister of Defence Mariya Ahmed Didi, Minister of Home Affairs Imran Abdulla, Minister of Higher Education Dr. Ibrahim Hassan, Minister of Islamic Affairs Dr. Ahmed Zahir, Minister of Youth, Sports and Community Empowerment Ahmed Mahloof and Chief of Staff, at the President's Office Ali Zahir.

The special committee has already held extensive discussions to find a solution to the uprising issue in social media platforms on religious criticism targeted to the Islamic faith.
