97 individuals express interest to contest in elections: JP

A total of 97 individuals have expressed interest to contest in the parliamentary elections from tickets provided by Jumhooree Party.

Speaking to PSM News, Spokesperson of Jumhooree Party Ali Solih said the deadline to submit applications expired on Friday, adding the selected 7-member committee has now begun to vet the applicants. Ali Solih revealed the party council is to decide which constituencies Jumhooree Party will field its candidates. He added the council will decide the number of constituencies to contest, as soon as the committee concludes the vetting process.

Jumhooree Party so far has not announced a regulation to contest in the upcoming elections. However, the party opened opportunities for interested candidates to run for the parliamentary elections, following the decision of Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) to contest for 86 constituencies.

On the issue, Leader of Jumhooree Party Qasim Ibrahim expressed readiness to join with other political parties to compete in the parliamentary election. He also said discussions were held with President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih about maintaining the coalition agreement on parliamentary elections, revealing however, he was informed the main ruling party, MDP, will not act in accordance with the agreement.

Meanwhile, during a recent press conference President Solih assured of no hindrances within the coalition and expressed his desire of a Parliament that will support in achieving the goals of the administration.

The parliamentary elections is scheduled to be held on April 6.
