PG Office dismisses terrorism charges raised against two former Police Commissioners

Prosecutor General’s Office has dismissed the terrorism charges raised against two former Commissioner of Police.

The Prosecutor General’s Office said the charges raised against Abdulla Riyaz and Ahmed Areef have been dismissed and sent back to Maldives Police Service. Following the decision, Prosecutor General Aishath Bisham sent a letter informing Abdulla Riyaz and Ahmed Areef the charges have been dropped.

Terrorism charges were raised against the two former police commissioners over the controversial verdict issued by the Supreme Court on February 1 last year, over allegations of conspiring a coup. The charges against them noted the Supreme Court verdict was issued for their own personal vendetta.

Meanwhile, terrorism charges on the same case on former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom, his son Faris Maumoon and his son-in-law Nadheem were also dismissed by state. However, the state did not dismiss the charges on then Supreme Court judges Abdulla Saeed, Ali Hameed, Parliamentarians Sinaan and Ilham.
